Lake Attraction
Chimney Rock and Acapulco Rock are popular spots for hundreds of boaters. Technically, Chimney Rock is an island with a lone rock that looks like a chimney jutting from the top of the island's cliffs. Nearby, Acapulco Rock has become the more popular rock because of its more accessible cliff ledges of differing heights. People of all ages park near the island, climb the tall cliffs and jump into some of the deepest waters on the lake. Goat Island, just north of Martin Dam, has been home to a family of goats for as long as most lake dwellers can remember. Boaters often cruise the waters along the islands shore, hoping for a glimpse of the bearded natives. Hopefuls are rarely disappointed, since the goats usually climb down the rocky hill to the water, eager for the lettuce and fruits often offered by boaters. Snake Island, locataed in the midst of the waterway near the Tallapoosa River Bridge, is an araea landmark to many. The island is approached by few because of its name and what that implies; popular wisdom holds, however, thata the name refers more to the overgrown appearance of the small island rather than to any inhabitants. Graveyard Island, measuring about 30 yards by 30 yards, is almost round. Surrounded by a seawall of concrete sacks stacked one on top of another - the sacks themselves are long gone, but the concrete retains their rounded shape - a small county graveyard of long ago is now a tiny island in Lake Martin and can be seen from lake homes in the Bay Pines area. Shaded by sweet gums and dusted with pine needles, the fading memorials are protected and still legible after a century. Kowaliga, a sleepy little area secluded in the trees along Lake Martin, was a little-known hideaway for cabins and campers until 1952 when Hank Williams recorded the song which made the area famous. The area is now home to Children's Harbor and the Church in the Pines, as well as Sinclairs. Children's Harbor lighthouse has in recent years become an area landmark in its own right. Visible from lake and land alike, the lighthouse is a symbol of light and hope to the abused and neglected children served by Children's Harbor |
